Unsigned Showcase: NGHBRS
[INTERVIEW PREVIEW]
SUR: So you have been voted Straight Up Random’s first ever Top Unsigned Band for the month of January! How do you feel about all your fan support?
Personally, I feel extremely grateful. Our growing fan-base is immensely awesome and they all radically support us. We have a lot of fans that have stuck with us since our first few shows and that means the world to us. We really push to stay in touch with each and every single person who supports us.
SUR: For those who don’t know your band, how did the you come together?
We developed in the late summer of 2009 after all of our old bands had decided to call it quits. The four of us decided to form this project based on good vibes, our common goals and aspirations, and the amount of fun we have playing music together.
SUR: Was it one specific event that influenced you to play your instrument and/or sing?
I’d say it was a bunch of things, I would always sing melodies to myself growing up. When I hit middle school, after already taking piano lessons for years, I became really interested in my family and my roots. At that time I inherited a super vintage guild guitar that was my grandfather’s. I then found out my grandfather was a professional musician and that really inspired me to start writing music. When I hit highschool and started talking to friends about making music I was really pushed to put myself out there and that really helped me get to where I am today, personally as a musician and vocalist.

Who are you and what do you do in the band?
Ian Kenny, Vocals, KeyboardsHow was the band formed?
The band was formed a little over a year ago. We formed from a few bands on Long Island that called it quits around the same time. How would you describe the band’s music?
We are a rock and roll band who has a very energetic vibey and jazzy influence. If someone has never listened to your band, which song would you like them to listen to first?
We would have them listen to Bodies. It was the first song we all ever FELT as we were writing together. It wound up sparking up the rest of our EP.What is the writing process like?
The writing process can get difficult, because we are avid believers in writing together, and not having one of us come in with a whole song written. We practice till all hours in the night together to write parts and feel the meaning and vibe of a song. I write the lyrics. Written word has been something I’ve always done since I was younger. As far as song concept instrumentally, we all have our ideas, but Tommy comes into practice with guitar riff ideas A LOT.Which Reality TV show would you like to be on?
HAHA We were just watching Silent Library on MTV and we were all saying how fun it would be to be on that show. We are pretty competative dudes. What bands do you believe deserve more credit/exposure?
As far as well established bands that we love and would like to credit: RX BANDITS, MUTE MATH, FOO FIGHTERS, RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, plus a million more I’m sure!As far as bands who deserve more exposure: Local buds of ours Gabriel The Marine, Hotel of the Laughing Tree, The Republic of Wolves, and Lights Resolve. And our buddies from Boston, Red Bellows, check all of those bands out, they are doing the right thing.
Do you have any pre-show rituals?
Before each show we have some sort of competition between the 4 of us. The loser has to perform a ROCKSTAR CHALLENGE during our set. This challenge is something that keeps us on our toes. It’s hysterical, for example if Tommy loses has has to do a ridiculous guitar knee slide during one of his solos. I have to say something embarrassing about myself before a song. It brings the 4 of us together. Hopefully the crowd sees that. What are the band’s plans for the year?
The plans for the year are to continue to write and release songs and videos, and most importantly touring as much as possible to get our music out there. What is your ultimate goal for the band?
Our ultimate goal is to always have a goal to reach no matter what. We never want to limit ourselves and we always want to be achieving something.Go to WWW.NGHBRS.COM Like us on WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/NGHBRS
COME SEE US LIVE, we never play the same set twice!
